Livin’ Large at the J.W.

Last year, we spent our 5th anniversary at a West Michigan Whitecaps game with both kids. It wasn’t really the most romantic thing in the world. Actually, that’s probably an understatement. So this year, we decided to go out on the town…dinner at the Cygnus 27 and a night at the new J.W. Marriott in downtown GR. It ended up being the longest uninterrupted amount of “couple time” that we have had since before Parker was born, which was incredibly nice!

The Cygnus? Surprisingly funky and the food was tasty, so a win-win situation. They sat us on a little raised platform level of the restaurant so that we could see out the windows all the way around and gaze out on our fair city.

Our room at the J.W. carried on the funky theme of the evening. It was very modern, had a nice flat screen television and a wonderful shower. The hot tub was not working and the bed was a little hard, but that’s being a little picky…

The next morning, we had a little breakfast “situation” which should have been avoided, being that we have now been married for six years. I should have known that Ben would sleep longer than me…probably by a lot, so I should have ordered room service breakfast the night before. I didn’t, however, and when I woke up at 8:30, (an hour and a half later than I would usually get up), I was starving. Then began the quest for finding a place to eat. After room service didn’t work out…we tried Sundance Grill, but it was on the other side of the path of the Fifth Third River Bank Run…then we tried Arnie’s, but ended up eating lunch because we were too late for breakfast. Figures…

We then went shopping at Lowe’s for exciting things like crabgrass killer, ornamental grass, and play sand…test drove a Toyota Sienna…and made it home before 2 p.m. on Saturday. I guess it is not a successful outing if you don’t throw in a few errands without buckling kids in and out of the car!

Anyways, here’s to another year of marriage!

  1. Happy belated anniversary, Rachel! We were at Cygnus recently but I hadn’t been there for years, and they definitely redid things since. Hope you guys have a wonderful 6th year. Does Adrian live in K-zoo? I swear I saw her at my pediatrician’s office the other day but I was on the “sick kid” side and she was on the “healthy kid” side…I didn’t want to cross the DMZ, so to speak. 🙂
