Our Little World

Our days are full of opposites right now.

Tuesdays and Thursdays we are on the run from morning until night with preschool, my classes, ballet, and whatever else. It is non-stop action, and there is barely a moment to breathe, let alone relax.

But our off mornings are the exact opposite. For example, yesterday the kids woke up about the same time, but I brought them into our room and we all just settled into our bed to watch Higglytown Heroes. Then a leisurely breakfast, a warm bath with the extra excitement of bath crayons, and then we headed outside to run around the backyard, completing “obstacle courses” and playing hide and seek.

I know that in a couple of years, this luxury will disappear. Every day will be a school day, and watching cartoons will be relegated to Saturday mornings. The kids will get themselves up and take their own showers and make their own breakfasts and they won’t want me to entertain them every second of the day. They won’t get excited about watching Sesame Street or Super Why and they will know better if I try to give them a healthy snack and pass it off as dessert.

I don’t think I’m quite ready for that yet. I really love having their warm little bodies snuggled up to mine without worrying about what school project is due or what friend is “mad” at them. I like that the biggest problems I have to solve is what is hiding inside the playhouse or finding “B” to take up to bed. It is physically exhausting, but impossibly simple. Yeah, they will have to grow up and face bigger things, but for now, I’ll take apples and peanut butter, Color Wonder markers, and Playdough cookies. It’s enough for me…
