Memories of Mike

This afternoon found Ben and I sitting under a big white tent in a park to remember the life of Mike Powers. He passed away unexpectedly this past weekend, and since Ben and I knew him from college and Ben knows his Dad through work, we went to the memorial service.

It was a celebration of his life, one that was focused on loving God and others. The common thread that ran through every comment that was shared about Mike was that he was always intentional about reaching out to others around him. It was incredibly sad, but also inspirational. It made me think about how I spend my time, because it was such a stark reminder that what matters at the end of life is not your success or the number of tasks that you complete. It is the relationships that we form and the people that we touch during our short sojourn on earth. It is so easy to get caught up in how “busy” we are, and we forget our purpose.

Mike Krick, who officiated the service, gave a life-affirming message…that life is precious, life is fragile, and there is something for us to look forward to after death. What a reminder to give your family those extra hugs, to pursue relationships wholeheartedly, and to use your time here on earth for something greater than yourself…for God’s glory.

I won’t easily forget the legacy of Mike’s life.

  1. I just found out the other day that Mike had passed. I saw a post his wife put on his Facebook page and was shocked to hear he had suddenly died. I wasn’t that close to Mike in college, but I remember him as being a really nice guy who made me smile. I’m glad you guys were able to go to the memorial service.

  2. Hi Rachel, I just found your blog. We heard about Mike’s passing last week as well. Very sudden and very sad. Randy traveled with Mike on a ministry team in college and he was also heavily involved in music. It definitely gives one pause to think and put one’s life into perspective. I’m glad you were able to attend the service for him. Our hearts ache for Kelly especially. We pray that everyone will walk away from this weekend knowing more of God thank to Mike. Love- Deidra
