Okay, so maybe it’s not much of a secret that I teach a couple classes, but sometimes it feels that way. I drive to campus, walk right to my classroom, do my thing, and head home. I have minimal interaction with other faculty and staff, and when I’m not at school, it’s not a major topic of conversation. Well, other than Ben, who is probably sick of hearing about it…
Because of this, it sometimes feels like a thankless job…not much feedback (other than what my students tell me)…takes a lot of time and energy…hmm, it sounds strangely familiar to my other job…never really thought about it that way.
BUT…once in a while, there are moments where it is all worth it. When a student tells you that Speech was their favorite class or when a student tells a younger sibling to take one of your classes or well, my Argumentation & Debate class tonight made the list. It was our first night of graded debates, which always makes me a little nervous, because I never know how they are going to do. Are they going to take what they have learned and get after it or will they crash and burn? Tonight…they got after it. It was really cool to see.
So I guess all the time I spent agonizing about what sequence to teach the material in and how to add more interactivity was worth it. I’m still way tired out and have a huge stack of papers to grade, but I’ll just think about the good things. At least until tomorrow, right?
